Triumph Scrambler 400 XC Wheel Upgrade Costs More Than Expected

Triumph has released the pricing for its newly-launched Scrambler 400 XC’s cross-spoke wheels and the figures would raise an eyebrow or two for interested parties. So much for running authentic spoke wheels, and both of them are priced at the top of the food chain with the front one asking for Rs 34,876 while the rear wheel comes in at Rs 36,875, putting their combined price to a serious Rs 71,751 for the complete set.

The cross-spoke wheels are offered as a Complete Built Unit (CBU) and are crafted by the same vendor that manufactures similar wheels for Triumph’s flagship models such as the Scrambler 1200 X and Tiger 900 Rally Pro.

Retrofit Is Possible But…

Post Nov 2020 Scrambler 400 X owners can convert their Exotic with these cross spoke wheels at the authorised Triumph service centres. But the retrofit also has notable restrictions, which potential buyers should keep in mind.

Very limited warranty in ‘s favor. For new Scrambler 400 XC owners, the warranty is limited to defects in the rim, not the spoke. Warranty does not cover accidental damage such as dents or bends.

This is especially tough for Scrambler 400 X owners who chose to go for the “retrofit” at their own risk. The cross-spoke wheels do not come with any warranty, even if they are fitted at the authorized service centers across the country, no thanks to the official homologation which hasn’t been taken up in India.

Price Compare: Less Than the Himalayan 450?

The cross-spoke wheel cost of the Triumph is more compelling when looking at its main rival. The tubeless cross-spoke wheels for Himalayan 450, is now priced from Rs 12,424 to Rs 40,645 from Rs 9,999.

Despite this astronomical price bump, the Himalayan 450’s cross-spoke wheels are still Rs 31,106 cheaper than Triumph’s alternative. Nevertheless, customers purchasing the Himalayan 450 for the first time will be able to grab the cross-spoke wheels for as low as Rs 11,000 while purchasing the motorcycle.

Technical Specifications and Features

The Scrambler 400 XC’s cross-laced wheels are built for off-road purposes. The setup includes:

  • 19-inch front tubeless dual-purpose tires wheel
  • Rear wheel is 17-inch with tubeless option available
  • Side-paired spoke pattern with Excel aluminum rims
  • Better off-road performance than standard alloy wheels

The motorcycle, called the Motorcycles LiveWire One, is powered by the same 398cc single-cylinder which is also found on the Scrambler 400 X and it generates 39.5 bhp at 8,000 rpm and 37.5 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm.

Market Positioning and Value Proposition

Priced at Rs 2.94 lakh, (ex-showroom) the Scrambler 400 XC is about Rs 27,000 more expensive than the standard Scrambler 400 X, and places it essentially against the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 and KTM 390 Adventure X in the adventure motorcycle segment.

The cost of cross-spoke wheels individually is so high that those who want off-road capability should just buy a new Scrambler 400 XC (pictured) instead of upgrading an existing model. But the gulf in price (and not just the aussie dollars) of purchasing the XC and fitting wheels to the 400 X, makes the XC a more affordable bike for those very keen aspiring lads.
