Tesla Model Y vs MG Cyberster: India’s New EV Rivals Face Off on Price and Range

Tesla is now officially in India and has unveiled its much-awaited Model Y electric SUV. At the same time MG has unveiled its beautiful electric sports car Cyberster, which signals an exciting battle in the premium electric car sector. One is the real world SUV, and the other is the sports roadster, but their pricing and electric powertrains means they compete in something of a league of their own.

Price: A Tale of Two Segments

The Tesla Model Y is priced aggressively, starting at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) version. With more miles on the mind is the Long-Range RWD model, which starts at ₹67.89 lakh.

Meanwhile, while the Jimny continues with being a more rustic option then here, the MG Cyberster appears to be more a premium offering with its one variant, costing a fat ₹74.99 lakh (ex-showroom). MG had announced a special introductory price of ₹72.49 lakh for customers who pre-booked the car.

Specifications: Power Meets Practicality

This is where the two EVs show their contrasting philosophies. The Tesla Model Y is an all-rounder when it comes to efficient, practical performance, while the MG Cyberster is purely about raw speed and power.

MG Cyberster:

  • Powertrain: Dual-motor, All-Wheel Drive (AWD)
  • Power: 503bhp & 725Nm of torque
  • Acceleration (0-100 kmph): 3.2 seconds (that means blistering)
  • Battery: 77kWh slimline battery pack

Tesla Model Y:

  • Powertrain: Single-motor, Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD)
  • Power: Approximately 295 hp
  • Acceleration (0-100 kmph): 5.9 seconds
  • Battery: 60 or 75 kWh battery pack available

Range: The Deciding Factor

For most EV buyers, range is the ultimate measure. The Tesla Model Y Long Range model is ahead in the list as well, delivering a WLTP-certified range of 622 km on a full charge. The rear-wheel drive (RWD) version will give you a still-impressive 500 km.

The MG Cyberster features a 77 kWh massive battery calibrated to deliver an MIDC-certified range of 580 km, ensuring that performance does not mean a compromise on efficiency. This makes it a formidable competitor, with sports car thrills and usable range.
