Legendary Elon Musk now has an Indian address with Tesla making its grand entry in India with the Model Y electric SUV starting at Rs 59.89 lakh ex-showroom. The electric crossover is Tesla’s first car for the Indian market and offers a WLTP range of 622km in Long Range trim, along with advanced autonomous driving tech.
Model Y comes in as a completely built-up unit (CBU) shipped from Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, and is expected to have deliveries starting by the third quarter of 2025. At the same time, Tesla has inaugurated its first showroom in India at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex, setting the stage for its entry into the premium EV scenario in India.
Tesla Model Y India Pricing And Trims
Tesla sells the Model Y in two different setups, both using a rear-wheel drivetrain:
Variant | Ex-Showroom Price | On-Road Price (Mumbai) | WLTP Range | 0-100 (km/h) |
---|---|---|---|---|
Model Y RWD | Rs 59.89 lakh | Rs 61.07 lakh | 500 km | 5.9 seconds |
Model Y Long Range RWD | Rs 67.89 lakh | Rs 69.15 lakh | 622 km | 5.6 seconds |
Pricing puts Tesla’s offering well above what local rivals offer, but it also is competitive with premium imports of BEVs. Bookings have opened and test rides, as mentioned earlier, would carry a booking token amount of INR 22,000 which is also non-refundable.
Range And Performance Specifications
The base Model Y has a WLTP-estimated 500km of range with a 60kWh LFP battery pack under the body. Long Range boosts the range of a single charge to a remarkable 622km with a 75kWh NMC battery.
They both top out at 201 km/h, while ticking the Tesla box of instantaneous torque that has become so erroneously synonymous with electric power. Model Y also supports fast charging, which adds 238km of range in 15 minutes for standard and 267km for Long Range variants.
Premium Features And Technology
Tesla has packed the India-spec Model Y with some more on-board tech features:
- Dependable safety in the form of seven airbags
- 360-degree camera system for better sightlines
- Rear touchscreen for passenger entertainment
- Electrically adjustable rear seats – first for a Tesla SUV
- ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) Features
- Compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
The Model Y also gets an optional Full Self Driving for an added Rs 6 lakh, but may not function fully in India because of the regulatory restrictions.
Market Positioning And Competition
Tesla’s entry is straight into India’s growing premium electric vehicle (EV) segment, competing directly with the likes of BMW iX1 (Rs 49 lakh), Volvo XC40 Recharge (Rs 49-57.9 lakh), and BYD Sealion 7 (Rs 48.9-54.9 lakh).
Pricing for Model Y is adjusted to account for such import duties and other related costs, with the Indian price translating to about $15,000 more than the US base price of $44,990. This makes Tesla a premium option in the emerging luxury EV market of India.

Tesla plans the introduction of the Model Y in three key cities including Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. The company has brought in vehicles, Superchargers, and accessories worth close to $1 million in advance of the launch.
The Model Y comes in six colors: Pearl White Multi Coat, Diamond Black, Ultra Red, Deep Blue Metallic, Stealth Grey, and Quicksilver. The Model Y and the soon-to-be-launched Model 3 sedan will be showcased at the Tesla Mumbai showroom, which will serve as the flagship location.
This launch sees Tesla strategically entering one of the quickest growing EV markets in the world and it’s just the start of what is anticipated to be a massive rise for the premium electric vehicle segment in India.
