Kia India, New Delhi: Kia India has finally launched its very first mass-market electric vehicle, the Kia Clavis EV, at a starting price of ₹17.99 lakh transitioning to ₹24.49 lakh (ex-showroom). The vehicle commenced its electric journey following the debut of its internal combustion engine counterpart in May 2025, presenting potential buyers with a choice: the silent, zero emissions future and petrol and diesel proven convenience.
The Clavis EV launches as a straightforward conversion of the ICE model, as they use the same platform and are inspired by the same SUV design. However, the powertrain technology core differences make them unique driving experiences and ownership offers, forcing them to choose between urban refinement and long-distance freedom.
The two technologies’ primary difference lies in the engine block. The ICE model has petrol and diesel compositions, while the Clavis EV utilizes the Hyundai Creta EV’s powertrain.
Kia Clavis EV:
- Standard Range: A 42kWh battery powered by a 135 hp electric motor cranks out 255 Nm of torque and is officially rated at 404 km.
- Long Range: A 51.4kWh battery with a more powerful 171 hp motor generating 255 Nm of torque is also available and is ARAI-certified for 490 km.
Kia Clavis ICE:
- 1.5L Petrol: An atmo engine generates 115 hp and 144 Nm.
- 1.5L Turbo-Petrol: A punchier 160 hp and 253 Nm powertrain.
- 1.5L Diesel: A torque-oriented engine produces 116 hp and 250 Nm.
The Clavis EV delivers a smooth, quiet and responsive ride that is perfect for urban commuting. Its one-pedal driving and regenerative braking add to a less stressful experience in stop-and-go traffic. ICE models (especially the diesel) are more appropriate yet for frequent long journeys since recharging is neither easy nor as quick as refueling.

Design and Features
The Clavis EV is visually restrained compared to its ICE sibling. Notable differences are a closed off front grille which features the charging port, a streamlined full-width LED light bar linking the DRLs and distinct 17-inch aerodynamic wheels. Aside from the reshaped headlamps, the EV model – in addition – gains pixel-type fog lamps, an item not featured on the standard Clavis.
Inside, the cabin design remains mostly the same, as does a suite of features that includes options such as a panoramic sunroof, a big touchscreen infotainment system and ventilated front seats. The Clavis EV, on the other hand, has a free central console area and a few unique features on top-spec versions. Both versions retain the model’s lauded practicality, including ample seating for seven and plenty of creature comforts.
So Which Clavis is for You?
The decision to go with the Kia Clavis EV over its ICE sibling will always be based on your main use.
For the urban commuter, however, we feel the Clavis EV makes the stronger case. Quieter, having smaller operating expenses, and easier to drive, it’s a much better option for everyday drives and the occasional weekend jaunt. The 280-mile battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 39 minutes with a DC fast charger, reducing range anxiety for planned road trips.
But if you’re someone who regularly takes long trips on the highway or lives in areas where charging infrastructure is sparse, then the Clavis ICE is still the more pragmatic buy. The perk of being able to refuel within minutes is a level of freedom and spontaneity which for now the EV even with award-winning range cannot compete with for long-distance hauls.
