India’s Favorite SUV: Creta Completes 10 Years With Unmatched Success

The Hyundai Creta has crossed a phenomenal sales mark in July, 2025 after recording an unprecedented 10 years of same in the Indian auto industry. The mid-sized SUV regained its title of ‘India’s highest selling passenger vehicle’ in June 2025 by registering 15,786 units and also it was the perfect time to be celebrating its 10th year anniversary.

The timing is not by accident. 10 years and counting since it came to the fore on July 21, 2015, the Creta remains a best-seller in an intense fight for marketshare in India’s highly crowded SUV market.

Record-Breaking Sales Performance

The dominance shown by the Creta isn’t limited to just this month either. In 2024, Hyundai had sold 1,86,919 Cretas, making up 31 per cent of total sales of the Korean car maker. That is roughly a Creta every five minutes during periods of high sales activity.

The mid-size phenomenon seemingly has the SUV by its tractor beam. The title of being the best-selling model was seized by it up to four times (March, April, June and August) in 2025 alone. Creta became India’s best-selling SUV in the first half of 2025 (Jan-Apr) with total sales of 69,914 units.

The Million-Unit Club Achievement

10 lakh Creta was crossed in the February 2024, doing so in just 101 months of its launch. The road to this milestone uncovers a growing demand trend – the initial 5 lakh units took five years to sell, the next 5 lakh took a mere 41 months.

And now, sales figures have confirmed that Maruti Brezza’s total sales in India have crossed the 1.2 million units mark since 2015. That such a career-defining hit can become the very definition of a segment is a measure of success that few vehicles ever attain: the industry now refers to the segment as the Creta segment.

Market Impact and Segment Leadership

Creta’s impact stretches beyond mere sales figures. With Creta at the helm, SUVs account for 67.6% of Hyundai’s total sales in India. Since the model’s debut in 2015, it has been India’s best-selling mid-size SUV every full year.

Key Performance Highlights:

  • Average monthly sales: More than 15,500 in 2024
  • Sales in Q4 FY25: 52,898 units (best-selling SUV)
  • Annual FY25 sales: 1,94,871 units (20% YoY increase)
  • Export victory: More than 2.8 lakh made-in-India Cretas shipped to markets worldwide

Evolution Through Generations

What has worked for the Creta is constant evolution spread out over two massive generations. The second generation model was released in 2020 as refinements were arrived via BlueLink connected technology, the addition of turbo engines, and panoramic sunroofs. 2024 facelift was introduced on May 14, 2024 which comes with added features and price ranging from ₹11 lakh (ex-showroom onwards).

Current Engine Options:

  • 115hp, 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol
  • 160hp, 1.5-litre turbo petrol
  • 116hp, 1.5-litre turbo-diesel

The arrival of the Creta Electric and the Creta N Line derivatives significantly grow the reach of the model range, and their addition will attract customers who are in search of alternative fuel solutions and sporty driving characteristics in the cars that they buy and drive.

Industry Recognition and Future Outlook

According to Tarun Garg, Director (Sales, Marketing and Service) at Hyundai Motor India, the Creta is “not just a product, but an emotion for over 1.2 million Indian families”. Pairing this strong emotional connection with practical features such as generous interior space, a choice of powertrains and competitive pricing enables this sustained demand.

The SUV’s victory is more than personal – it is symbolic of India spending its money on SUVs. In effect, the Creta was the one that actually put up midway and that too not defensively with a large foot forward, setting new benchmarks in the segment that others have since chased.

With the automotive industry progressing towards electrification and connected ecosystems, the Creta’s adventurous journey of 10 years primes it to lead the new-age narrative of India which would narrate the story of sustainable mobility without losing its appeal as a chartbuster.
